I feel that learning drums as any other instrument should be fun, yet informative. As the old saying goes "Patience is a virtue." Student's no matter what their age should never feel like they are being forced to learn. Some people learn at a high pace, others at a slower pace. A personal relationship needs to be built between a teacher and a student.
I teach each student as an individual within their own space of comfort and learning level. I want every student to feel comfortable with me, my teaching studio, and with what they are learning.
My students have a professional kit to play on during their lessons, I don't like the idea of one drum set while teaching, more time gets wasted on adjusting the kit, and then lesson time gets lost in that situation. I do not require a 2 year contract and give a free set a drums with it. That wind's up costing you much more money in the long run.
Lessons are 40 minutes each. Most students come to lessons every week, some every other week. At then end of one month, the student is given a basic test of coordination, syncopation, and determination. The final score represents whether we should continue with lessons. The student, myself and parent(s) will discuss different types of drum sets, etc.
Each student is taken through the course of rudiments, followed by learning different types of music genre's. (Jazz-Rock-Funk-Latin). He/she is also taught "stick control" known as the Moheller Method, stick and brush methods.
My studio is set up with 2 complete professional GMS Drum Kits, digital and analog recording, video recording, bass reflex speakers behind each drum kit. (This is the best way for a drummer to lock in to time with a bass player). I also have stage lights and am air conditioned.
I have been playing for 50 years, and have been teaching for 25 years. All my life I have associated with all kinds of musicians from all over the world. I have toured with Windrose, The Wes Marquett Jazz Quartet, and my current band, Enuff Said. (www.enuffsaidband.com). I was also in charge of the Oxnard Percussion Academy, and putting together many music events. I hold Artist Relation contracts with the following:
GMS Drum Co., Evans Drumhead Co., Pro-Mark Drum Stik Co., Groove Juice, May International, LT Luglock, Electro-Voice, and SKB Cases.
